Medical cannabis in Malta requires a prescription, control card and permit from the Superintendent of Public Health. We handle the paperwork — you should know how it works.

Your full medical history is reviewed. The doctor explains the treatment and you sign a treatment agreement. An application is submitted to the Superintendent of Public Health.
The first approval covers 30 days. The doctor handles the paperwork — including the control card for narcotic and psychotropic drugs.
At your follow-up, the doctor explains how to use the medicine, issues your first prescription and schedules ongoing reviews (every 6 months after the first 30 days).
Patients with chronic conditions who haven't responded adequately to conventional treatments may be eligible. You'll need to complete an eligibility questionnaire and attend an initial assessment with one of our doctors.
After your initial assessment, the doctor applies to the Superintendent of Public Health. Approval typically takes 2–3 weeks. Once approved, a follow-up appointment is scheduled to issue your first prescription.
Yes. Medical cannabis has been legal in Malta since 2018 when prescribed by a licensed doctor and approved by the Superintendent of Public Health. You'll need a prescription, control card and permit.
Medical cannabis is available as dried flower (for vaporisation) and as oil (taken sublingually). Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate form based on your condition and symptoms.

Malta currently applies a zero-tolerance approach to driving with cannabis in your system, regardless of whether it is prescribed. Your doctor will discuss how this may affect you during your consultation.
